Welcome to Lake View

Lake View began as farmland along the lakeshore, once considered the celery capital of the region, and was home to Miami, Ottawa, and Winnebago camps before European settlement. Conrad Sulzer became the first known European settler here in 1837. The area incorporated as its own township in 1857 and as a city in 1887, before voting to join Chicago in 1889.

The neighborhood's identity shifted permanently in 1914, when Charles Weeghman built a ballpark at Clark and Addison for his Chicago Whales. The Cubs moved in a few years later, and after William Wrigley Jr. bought the team, the park took his name. The blocks immediately around the stadium became known as Wrigleyville.

Lake View's Northalsted strip, long known as Boystown, holds the distinction of being the first officially recognized gay village in the United States, a designation it earned in 1997. The Chicago Pride Parade has marched through the neighborhood every June since its early years.

Today Lake View is one of Chicago's most populous community areas, with just over 100,000 residents.
